Matthew 18:21-35

Forgiveness

In this text we see Jesus teaching us

*Our  Attitude of forgiveness:  We should want to forgive.  Peter in v.21 wanted to do right.

*Our Action of forgiveness:  We should always forgive those who are truly repentant, no matter how many times they ask.  Why should we wait, why should we argue with scripture?

*Our Ability to forgive:  Everyone can forgive.  It boils down to our willingness.

For the Gospels sake,  We will  see how much Christ wants to forgive.
For Christian discipleship, We will see how much Christ wants us to forgive others.

v.35 if we can’t forgive, what blessings will be held back from our life.

Mat. 6:14 - 15  For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

It is much more easier to ask for forgiveness than to give it.

Here in this parable it is so easy to see what Christ is talking about.

I want to look at six references to Christ’s forgiveness:

  1. Paralyzed man: No matter who you are, he has the ability to forgive.
He showed He had the Power to forgive.

  2. Woman caught in adultery: No matter what sin you’ve done, no sin is above another in God’s eyes.
He showed He was not Partial.

  3. Woman who anointed Jesus feet: No matter how much your involved in.
He showed He is Plentiful in forgiveness.

  4. Peter, for denying he knew Jesus:  No matter how far you go.
He showed how Profound His forgiveness was.

  5. Thief on the cross:  No matter how long you wait.
He showed how Patient He is

  6. People who crucified Christ:  It does matter if you accept His forgiveness.
He showed how Pitiful He is toward us.
James 5:11 the Lord is very pitiful and of tender mercy.

For the Gospels sake,  We will  see how much Christ wants to forgive.
For Christian discipleship, We will see how much Christ wants us to forgive others.
