I. There was Opposition
Our greatest opposition is Satan.
He is no respecter of persons. He has no regard to human life.
He is a rebel against God, God's throne and against God's children.
Here he was using David's son, whom he loved tremendously, to war against David.
Satan attacks the family. He knows if he can divide the family he has won a large battle. If he can divide the family of God he has won a large battle and gained a stronghold.
Another opposition we have is Self. We know our
weaknesses and our failures,
more than we know our strenghts. When we focus on these we stay in
one place. We retreat and back up. David continued to run. He
continued to hide.
We find opposition within our friends and family. (v.2)
II. There was Opportunity
(v.4) With opposition comes opportunity. Opportunity to cry
unto the Lord.
(Psalm 6:1-10) What is associated with opposition? with
suffering? Tears.
We cry when we are first born, we cry when we know we are dying, we
cry from our first tooth to our last tooth.
A mother cries over a lost child, Parents cry over a wayward son, we cry
over a youthful love, a child cries over a broke toy. Can tears repair the
toy, can they bring back a loved one. No
What can tears do? They can reach the heart of God.
An angel was sent from heaven to find the most precious substance on
earth. He returned with tears.
Satan trembles at the sound of one crying to God. He has to run
and hide when he sees one on their knees crying to God, asking for help.
Many times we have to get down in the gutter before we reach up for help.
Opportunity to Cry to God comes from opposition.
III. There is Overcoming
David said the Lord "has smitten all mine enemies." (v.7)
David said he found peace enough to sleep, (v.5)
Where did this overcoming come from? It came from a heart that was
ready to trust in the Lord.
David had strength to rise and face the day afresh. (v.5)
With Jesus we too can face the challenges of each day. It is recorded in the Word of God. He is our strength, he is our fortress, he is our rock, he is our shield.
